Odenton, Md.-based Independent Electrical Contractors — Chesapeake Chapter (IECC) and The University System of the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C., are pleased to announce a joint effort to offer a regional accelerated electrical apprenticeship program that combines hands-on-training with course-based instruction through UDC's Community College (CCDC).
Beginning Spring 2011, CCDC workforce students in electrical programs will team with electrical contractors to gain on-the-job experience. In addition, new electrical contractor apprentices in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia will participate in CCDC electrical courses.
Course instruction for the first year of the apprenticeship model will be offered at the centrally located PR Harris Education Center and will be based on electrical apprenticeship curricula supported by industry leader, Mike Holt, which are approved both federally and in Washington, D.C. Hands-on-training will focus on basic wiring methods, pipe bending, and other activities to enhance the classroom experience.
The Accelerated Electrical Year One program is a first step by IECC and CCDC to promote collaboration in future training initiatives such as renewable energy, continuing education, and workforce development training to address the immediate needs of Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. IECC and CDCC look forward to offering another Year One class in the fall 2011.
