Beco, Inc. Joins Forces with Purple Heart Homes

High Point, N.C.-based Beco, Inc. recently teamed up with Purple Heart Homes, an organization committed to finding quality of life solutions for American veterans, to make one war veteran’s life less difficult and a whole lot brighter. Veteran Dave Morrell, 63, served three tours of duty in the U.S. Army Special Forces in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969, during which time he was exposed to Agent Orange. As a result, Morrell suffers from heart problems and diabetes, conditions which led to the amputation of his left leg. Though he has experienced a lot of discomfort over his ongoing health conditions and having lost his leg, Morrell claims he’s not handicapped — just disabled — and is well-armed with a quick-wit and lots of charisma. "Getting around with a walker in my house has been a real struggle," says Morrell. "I suffered with my disability for 20 years with constant pain before I finally had my leg amputated.

Purple Heart Homes, with support from partners such as Beco Inc., is renovating and adding on to Morrell's existing bedroom and bath in the home he shares with his son and his son’s family in Harrisburg, N.C. The new 18'x20' bedroom addition and renovation, which includes making the bathroom handicap accessible, will enable Morrell to live more safely and comfortably. "Words cannot express the tremendous gratitude I have for Purple Heart Homes and BECO Inc. for recognizing the disabilities Vietnam veterans like myself must deal with on a daily basis," says Morrell.

Beco, Inc. and several of its valued technicians had long wanted to make a difference in the lives of American veterans. Beco, Inc.’s President David Saunders approached Purple Heart Homes about how his firm might support the project. “It was exciting to think we could be a part of something meaningful to a person’s life who had so faithfully served our country,” states Saunders. “Several of our team members are passionate about giving back to those who have served our country. When we told them about this opportunity, they immediately jumped on board and volunteered their time.”

The renovation is slated to be complete in mid-April. Beco, Inc. acquired the necessary permits to provide the electrical revisions and additions and worked with their suppliers and contacts to provide the needed materials, as well as their team members pitching in and donating their time. “It was a pleasure to serve Morrell in this way,” states Saunders. “Purple Heart Homes is just a great organization. Our hope is that we can continue to work with them, and other groups passionate about assisting American veterans in this important mission.”
