NEMA has released a revised version of its much anticipated Motors and Generators, MG 1-1998, standard. For the first time, MG 1 is available in print and CD-ROM formats. Since the standard is a lengthy document, the CD-ROM is an advantageous and convenient time-saver, providing users with quick reference and ease of transporting. It assists users in the proper selection and application of motors and generators. Revised periodically, the standard provides for changes in user needs, advances in technology, and changing economic trends. Practical information includes performance, safety, test, construction, and manufacture of AC and DC motors and generators. Also involved is an appreciation of the problems of manufacture, installation, and use derived from consultation with and information obtained from manufacturers, users, inspection authorities, and others. This version contains several significant additions and revisions, with the intent to make the standard more user-friendly. Steve Stertz of Leeson Electric comments on the importance of the revisions to Parts 30 and 31 (inverter-fed motors) that take into account evolving technology. “Motor/inverter systems are the wave of the future in the motor industry, and it is important that MG 1 keep up with the technology,” he says. Nirmal Ghai of the Leroy Somers Division of Emerson Electric Co. feels that the combination of all dimensional information into one part, the new Part 32, will simplify life for users.
