From cutting-edge topics such as fiber optics and home automation, to the always important issues surrounding grounding and bonding and the National Electrical Code (NEC), there's something for every electrical professional at this year's 13th Annual Western Electrical Exposition & Conference, held February 26 to March 1 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

To kick off the show, you won't want to miss the free keynote address, "Stress Management, Succeeding Under Pressure in Today's Fast-Paced World," presented by Patrick Rummerfield. After a car accident left him a quadriplegic two decades ago, Rummerfield not only overcame all odds to walk again, he went on to compete in some of the country's most challenging sports competitions. He also broke the world land speed record for an electric car in 1999 by reaching speeds over 250 mph. This presentation will be sure to inspire and uplift you as well as help you rise above the pressures of everyday life.

Some of the industry's leading technical experts will present more than two dozen sessions. In a special General Session, free to all attendees, you'll gain insight into where the economy is heading - and what that will mean to your business. Other sessions will cover the critical topic of harmonics causes, symptoms and solutions; the 15 things you must know about grounding and bonding; and the 25 most important NEC rules.

If you need to catch up on some of the new technologies having an impact on electrical installation and construction work, attend the seminar on the requirements for intelligent buildings. There's also one describing the integration of home automation systems. Additional presentations will teach you the ins and outs of fiber optics, show you the design/build opportunities opening up through utility deregulation, and discuss maintenance and testing techniques for ensuring power quality.

In addition to the regular conference sessions, Electric West 2001 will feature three full-day Pre-Conference Workshops, held the day before the show gets underway. These intensive workshops will focus on energy-efficient lighting, grounding and bonding, and residential low-voltage structured wiring. These sessions reserve plenty of time for questions and discussion with the instructors.

On the product front, hundreds of the industry's leading suppliers will showcase products at the show this year - ranging from basic wire and tools, to sophisticated testing instruments and power quality monitors. Among the thousands of products demonstrated will be hundreds that are making their debut to the electrical industry.

Companies will launch such new items as high-performance (HP) ballasts for frequently switched applications; feature-rich compression lugs to meet the demands of the telecommunications industry; a special tool to speed up cable preparation for electrical or fiber optic connections; and an infrared thermometer that features one-button operation and single-point laser-sighting.

There will also be a single-phase power quality logger that measures and logs from a complete suite of electrical and power-quality parameters; thermal/magnetic type manual motor controllers used to protect the wiring and loads of electrical circuits against thermal overload and magnetic short circuit; a digitally controlled, online double conversion UPS in 3kVA and 5kVA single-phase sizes; and a fiber optic toolbox that gives installers a full set of tools for termination and splicing, plus a fully automated tester with fiber optic talkset.

For anyone interested in the exploding field of voice/data/video, there will be a special Voice/Data/Security Pavilion, displaying the latest voice and data cabling products designed especially for electrical professionals.

No matter what your specialty is, Electric West 2001 will help you keep up with trends and technology as well as find all of the newest products and services under one roof. It's an opportunity you can't afford to miss!

If you've ever wondered how to face the pressures and challenges of daily life, you won't want to miss this year's Keynote Address: an inspiring presentation by Pat Rummerfield, whose story is the epitome of overcoming all odds to succeed.

The award-winning amateur athlete/race car driver will describe his 20-year road back from paralysis in a car accident to the achievement of such high-reaching goals as graduating from medical school, competing in the Iron Man Triathlon, and setting the world land speed record in an electric car. Competing in the Graybar-sponsored White Lightning II streamliner, Rummerfield continues to wow audiences at the Bonneville Salt Falts in Utah.

Rummerfield has received numerous awards, including the prestigious ARETE Award for Courage in Amateur Sports in October 2000 and the Human Spirit Award from Gateway to a Cure in a November 2000 presentation with Christopher Reeve. Free to all attendees, Rummerfield's address will not only inspire you, but will also provide you with stress-busting advice that can help you confront your challenges in a positive way - and lead you toward long-term success in your personal and professional life.
