Idaho's DIY Inspection Reflection

What do you do when your state's inspectors have too many jobs to inspect? Give them less to do. A building boom and lack of funding have tightened the screws on Idaho's already overworked inspection crew and forced the state's electrical board to discuss the possibility of allowing preferred electrical contractors to self-certify their work. Gary Malmen, Idaho State Electrical Bureau chief, says such a move would be intended to relive the strain on the state's 38 inspectors, but that it was still in the “brainstorming” phase. Would it help? Between red-tagging installations, two beleaguered justices of the Code gave us their thoughts.
