Stadium gets a kick of out new lighting network

The 54,000-seat Pusan Asiad Main Stadium in Pusan, Korea, completed for the 2002 World Cup and Asian Games, is the pinnacle of modern engineering. It also boasts the most sophisticated control network for power and lighting management, according to Echelon Technology.

The stadium is said to be one of the few construction projects using both of the leading worldwide standards for open, interoperable building automation systems. One standard, a gateway-based protocol used primarily with HVAC&R systems, focuses on interoperability between complete subsystems within a building using PC gateways. The other standard, Echelon Lonworks networks, specifies interoperability at the device level, eliminating gateways except in situations that involve closed, legacy subsystems or subsystems that are, by building code, closed. Lonworks networks embrace every subsystem within an automated building, from access to elevator to lighting to HVAC&R to blinds — and everything in between.

“Echelon's Lonworks technology was selected as the platform of choice to automate lighting in the stadium both because of its interoperability with other technologies and the ability to incorporate existing and new devices into the network,” said Seuk Kyung Sung, vice president of Samsung Heavy Industries. “We started with a gateway-based system blueprint for the controls of the building, but quickly realized that we could provide additional value to the building owner by upgrading the system with a Lonworks-based lighting control system. For example, the 665 nodes connected by LONWORKS technology in the stadium could one day be Internet controlled and monitored, or used by new, LONWORKS based subsystems and enhancements to the facility. This would drive the life-cycle costs of the facility down, provide more cost-effective management solutions, and allow a greater selection of suppliers and products to the owner from which to choose when they extend and upgrade the facility.”

The World Cup originates from the Olympic games of the 20th century and is every four years for the entire month of June.
