Randy Barnett and I walked along a Riverwalk in this historic southern city after our seminar and discovered this electrical surprise (and many others) near a major hotel. The NEC 400.7(B) requires the use of attachment plugs on flexible cords for permitted applications of flexible cords. Section 406.6 includes requirements for attachment plugs when these plugs are used. The problem here is that no attachment plug was used at all. Section 110.3(B) requires listed or labeled equipment to be used and installed in accordance with any instruction in its listing or labeling. The UL General Information for Electrical Equipment Directory “White Book” identifies this commonly used receptacle as one for use with attachment plugs. Well, if nothing else, at least the polarity appears to be correct.

NOTE: Randy didn't see me taking his picture when he snapped this violation.
