The Disaster Fund is incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in New York State and anticipates receiving a tax exemption number shortly. Contributions to the Fund will be disbursed in accordance with the guidelines set by the trustees. The Fund is committed to disbursing all monies to the victim's families. The Trustees elected Dennis McSpedon, Chairman, Joseph R. Bechtold, Secretary, and John E. Marchell, Treasurer. All officers and trustees of the Fund serve voluntarily.
The founding of the Fund came about as a result of the outpouring of generosity by the members of the IBEW at the 36th Constitutional Convention of the IBEW. The Convention was held in San Francisco, CA, September 10th through the 14th. Delegates awoke to the news of the terrorists' attacks upon the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, on September 11th. Untold numbers of delegates immediately expressed their concern, sympathies and willingness to ease the pain felt by our members and their families. From the 11th through the close of the Convention delegations began to publicly commit monies to be used for the well being of the IBEW members and their families that were affected by this insane act of terrorism.
Upon the return of Local 3's officers and delegates from the Convention, additional inquiries have been made by our members, other IBEW local unions, friends and associates of the electrical industry as to how they could go about contributing on behalf of the families of the victims who were members of the IBEW. Currently IBEW members of Local 3, and Local 1212 have been identified as missing. Local 26, Washington, D.C. reports no loss of members.
