The cover on this conduit body, which is below the cabinet enclosing a panelboard installed indoors, was removed to allow rain water that accumulated during storms to be drained into the convenient waste line below it. The waste line was run to the outside of this electrical equipment room. Sections 225-22 and 230-53 both require raceways to drain when they are used to enclose branch circuit, feeder and service-entrance conductors run on exterior surfaces of buildings that are exposed to weather. The raceways, except flexible metal conduit (see Section 350-5(1)) are supposed to be raintight and arranged to drain. Article 100 defines “raintight” as being constructed or “protected” so that exposure to a beating rain will not result in the entrance of water under specified test conditions. These Code rules should never be interpreted to allow rain to drain on electrical equipment. To see the complete article, view the PDF by clicking here.
